A Challenge from Pastor Bob

Will YOU fast and pray with us?

If you’ve been around Northpark for a while you know that we believe in the power of prayer accompanied by fasting.

In fact Jesus said in Mark 9:29 (NKJ), when His disciples could not cast out a demon, “This kind can come out by nothing but prayer and fasting.”

We have some BIG problems in our lives, our homes and in our nation.

I feel it’s time to pray and fast for our nation.

I asked you a short time ago to read the Book of Esther. It’s the story of an orphan girl who was elevated to queen “for such a time as this”, who called her people to 3 days of prayer and fasting, resulting in her people being miraculously spared from genocide.

I’m calling us to do a 3 day fast, September 14-16, 2020 (Monday – Wednesday).

Our primary focus as a congregation (along with other congregations) is praying for our nation; although, it’s appropriate to pray about the things that seem impossible in our own lives.

  • For an eradication of COVID-19
  • For Shalom (God’s peace) in our nation
  • For the direction our nation is headed and for the upcoming elections – for God’s will, not our own

In fact, I’m calling you, if you’re healthy enough to do so, to eat no solid food on those three days while spending as much time in prayer that you possibly can.

Just like the Nation of Israel was praying for their very lives, we need to pray that way for the United States of America.

Here are some ways to begin preparing yourself now:

  • Read the book of Esther.
  • Begin asking God what and how He wants you to fast.
  • Begin praying for our nation and any other impossible things in your life today.
  • Begin to rearrange your calendar now.
  • Make a plan!

Here are some things to consider as you plan:

If you’re going to consume liquids or water only you will need to ease into and out of the fast. Less food 3 days before and after the fast (for health and comfort reasons). These limited eating days can also be considered fasting days, potentially making this a 9 day fast.

Begin considering how you are going to spend your days. When and how are you going to pray? A fast without prayer is just a diet.

Consider enlisting a group of friends who will join you daily in prayer.
